Coventry City Council has a statutory duty to ensure sufficient school places and fair, appropriate access to education for all. It is the Council’s role to plan, commission and organise school places in a way that raises standards, manages supply and demand and creates a diverse infrastructure.

The council have developed a survey to gather your views on the proposed expansion of Sherbourne Fields Special School. This proposed project will provide an opportunity to expand an Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ provision in the city, to meet rising demand for special school places across Coventry. Sherbourne Fields School provides specialist education towards a broad spectrum of need including physical disabilities, medical conditions and learning needs. The school provides an excellent range of facilities to the city’s vulnerable learners. This proposed project will enable more children to be able to access these facilities and ensures the current quality of education provided by the school continues to increase.

This consultation has been developed to ensure the council carry out open and fair communications with parents, carers, nearby schools, and other interested parties of Sherbourne Fields Special school. Completing a consultation is part of the statutory process for an expansion of this size. The information that you share as part of this consultation will be fed back and taken into consideration for this project.

Please take a look at our leaflet (which can be found under 'documents' on the right side of the screen) which gives an overview of the proposed expansion of Sherbourne Fields Special School

The consultation is now closed. Thank you for taking the time to submit your responses, we appreciate your comments. This feedback is currently being analysed, and once this has occurred and a final decision on the outcome will be published, on this consultation page, and with the school.

Next Steps:

Following consultation, and as a conclusion to the Sherbourne Fields Special School Consultation 2020 for expansion from September 2020, the consensus is that this expansion is very much needed and highly supported to proceed. The proposal is to enhance the provision not only in terms of accommodating the additional pupils, but also enhancements within the school itself; full hygiene suite refurbishment, increase the size of classroom spaces, improving sixth form facilities and an additional hygiene suite. Funding is all in place, and despite COVID-19 challenges, both modular projects and internal works are working towards a September 2020 completion. It has been assured that Coventry City Council will work with the school as closely as possible in order to minimise disruption and help with solutions. The decision has therefore been made to proceed with the expansion.
