We want to make sure that Coventry is far more active by 2024. At the moment, just over half of the city's adults regularly do exercise, and this means that we are lots worse than most of the country. We need to work together to help fix this so that everyone can be more healthy.

To do this, we came up with the beginnings of a plan. We asked the people of Coventry what they thought of our plan and of our big four priorities.

Our priorities:


  1. Enhance our places and spaces for all
  2. Improve how we communicate
  3. Movement for life
  4. Develop leadership and skills at all level


We enjoyed receiving lots of feedback from the people of Coventry. You told us that we should:

  • Improve safety in parks and around walking and cycling routes & increase signage and the number of routes and off road tracks available in the city.
  • Offer guided walks and grow these through volunteering.
  • Provide discounts, free activities and incentives.
  • Make more timely information available in community venues, face to face, free newspapers and radio ads as well as digitally.
  • Create more opportunities for activities to be organised with and by communities help with sourcing funding and support with governance to enable local groups and clubs to set up.
  • Improve facilities e.g. changing rooms, toilets, equipment etc. provided in local communities to reduce the need to travel.
  • Reduce age restrictions in leisure facilities and a better social scene for young people; offer more dance venues and activities etc.
  • More adult and older adult only activities were also asked for and better leisure venue opening hours to allow for people who work during the day.
  • Think about inclusive planning that allows disabled people more opportunities to access events and facilities.
  • Get businesses and schools involved in improving inactivity - offer activities for employees and families.
  • More engagement of Health and Social Care in tackling inactivity.

    We did:

    Working with Edgewick Primary School, the Families for All hub, Foleshill Baptist Church, Public Health, Sky Blues in the Community, the Positive Youth Foundation and Be Active Be Healthy, Edgwick park will be hosting a variety of free activities including cricket, multisports, cycling and running. All community residents will be invited to attend – trying to tackle the issue of the park being inaccessible due to

All community residents will be invited to attend – trying to tackle the issue of the park being inaccessible due to safety concerns and anti social behaviour and encouraging local residents to reclaim the space in a positive way.

    The first wave of parks development included walking routes and distance markers installed in 44 parks across Coventry. The aim was to make parks and green spaces more safe and accessible to the community after feedback from residents.

    The second wave has included five more routes in parks, and four outdoor gyms installed during Summer 2019.

    There are now 19 community festivals across Coventry, supported by European City of Sport, run by the community and supported by a variety of community organisations. There is also now more support to help volunteers to use the parks, increasing family activity and showcasing what the park has to offer!
