What's the plan?
We are planning to build 2.75 km (1.7 miles) of two-way, fully segregated cycleway linking the city centre with Coundon Green. The new cycleway is planned to go along the Coundon Road/Barker's Butts Lane corridor. This is part of a package of plans to help make air quality in Coventry better. We want to make an easy and comfortable cycling experience which new and existing cyclists will feel confident using.
What will it be like?
The cycleway will be a section of the street which is dedicated for the use of people on cycles. It will be in between the road and the footpath and will be physically separated from both by kerbs and a change in level. It will have priority over side roads and it will even have its own traffic signals at junctions and crossings.
Who is it for?
It's for everyone, but we are especially aiming it at people who don't currently cycle because of safety concerns. In a recent survey across the West Midlands, out of the people that don't currently cycle, the biggest reason for not cycling is because they were 'concerned for their safety'. More than three out of four people said that cycling safety isn't good enough - especially for children. So we've designed the scheme with safety as our biggest aim - we're physically separating cycles and cars. It's also going to be direct and comfortable to ride on, with minimal delay.
First, we're doing a public consultation. That means that we're asking you to have a look at the plans and let us know what you think - good and bad. Following consideration of your comments, we'll make any amendments to the proposals and then advertise the Traffic Regulation Orders (What's one of those? Have a look here). Then, fingers crossed, we hope to start construction in the Autumn after everything gets approved.
