Community Resilience popped along to see how the Dominion Grace breakfast club was doing at the Hagard in Willenhall this month. They had been helped to access two years of external funding, #Covconnect digital devices and apply for a small Public Health Grant.
They are now offering digital support, with access to laptops and free internet at the club. While also being able to access online support for local people to get help to give up smoking.
This has been going well with volunteers supporting residents to get online to access their own benefit accounts, look for work, seek advice, while also being encouraged to access this unique specialised smoking support. Which will ultimately support their health and wellbeing.
Dominion Grace received digital devices and dongles for internet from #Covconnect. These are being used at the project, and some have been given to people/families that need really them.
One laptop was provided to a 25-year-old, who is in receipt of PIP who was struggling to access an online educational training course. They have had a long-term mental health condition with extreme anxiety and at times they have struggled to leave their house. They had no internet as struggling to pay bills and were trying to access this training on their phone.
This donated device and dongle has made a massive difference to their lives. They now have internet access at home and a device they can use to support them to move forward, build their confidence while accessing some educational training. Their long-term goal is to get well and find employment in the future with their new skills.
Coventry boxing club sees 'massive impact' on young people since receiving £5k grant
The Community Resilience Team as been working alongside the Sports Development and Physical Wellbeing Team at the council to support a new organisation operating from Bell Green Social Club.
Providing boxing training for young people in the local area. CRT have been supporting them to set up their charity so they can access external resources for this this much needed provision for young people locally.
They recently received £5000 from Heart of England Foundation for a new boxing ring and have just been supported to apply to the National Lottery to get more resources to keep this youth provision going over the next two years.
Damon Craft joined the boxing club in 2024 and said only two children were regulars. However, since the revamp of the new ring and a fresh coat of paint, each session has up to 50 children, which has made a 'massive impact' on attendees.
Mr Croft says the gym provides a safe space for young people and gives them a hobby rather than having them on their phones all day or out on the streets: "We've had so many parents comment on how much their child's behaviour and manners have improved since being with us.
"To see a child that's not very confident coming into the gym and the next thing they're walking into a boxing ring and achieving their goals. It has many benefits, from self-discipline, confidence, and focus, as well as helping with overall fitness."

Coventry & District Walking Football Celebrates National Recognition
The Community Resilience Team is thrilled to announce the recent achievements of the Coventry & District Walking Football group, a testament to the power of community support and dedication.
Securing Funding for Walking Football Sessions
The Community Resilience Team, initially supported them to access funding to develop walking football sessions in Coventry and North Warwickshire, which has proved very popular. The success of this initiative has been so remarkable that efforts are now underway to secure additional funds to expand their women's section of the club.
Walking football is not just a fun and engaging activity; it also offers numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular fitness, reduced stress, and enhanced overall wellbeing for all participants.
A highlight of the group's recent achievements is the national recognition of volunteer Alwyn Day. Alwyn's tireless efforts were celebrated at the prestigious Festival of Women’s Football Awards night in London. This star-studded event honoured contributions to women's football from grassroots to professional levels.
Alwyn was nominated in the 'Grassroots Coach of the Year – Adult' category for his exceptional work in forming and running the new women's section. His dedication has transformed the lives of many women, some of whom had never played football or participated in sports before. They have now been invited to join the Birmingham Ladies Walking Football League.
Alwyn's recognition at this national event is a proud moment for the Coventry & District Walking Football group and a testament to the impact of community-driven initiatives. Well Done Alwyn !

Dominion Grace Breakfast Club: Building Community Resilience in Willenhall
Every Saturday from 10am to 1pm, the Dominion Grace Breakfast Club at the Hagard Community Centre in Willenhall is making a significant impact on the local community. Run by dedicated volunteers, including some with learning difficulties, this initiative provides a welcoming space for residents to enjoy a free breakfast and socialise. The club's unique waitress service allows volunteers to connect with attendees and foster a sense of community.
Each week, up to 120 residents, ranging from 1 to 90 years old, gather at the breakfast club. For many, this is their only opportunity to socialise, especially given the current cost of living challenges. The club not only addresses food insecurity but also combats social isolation, making it a vital resource for the community.
The Community Resilience Team (CRT) has played a crucial role in supporting Dominion Grace by securing much-needed funding. Thanks to a generous grant of £18,970 from the National Lottery, the project will continue for the next two years. This funding will cover room hire, food, plates, and cutlery, ensuring the breakfast club can keep serving the community.
Additionally, CRT helped Dominion Grace obtain a £2,000 Public Health Grant. This grant will be used to establish a Smokefree table at the breakfast club, where trained volunteers will offer advice and resources to help residents quit smoking, promoting healthier lifestyles within the community.
Volunteer Voices: "Being part of this project has helped me build my confidence and make new friends," said one volunteer.
Dominion Grace commented, "We cannot thank the Community Resilience Team enough for their help with this project. Their support has been invaluable in ensuring we can continue to serve our community."
Dominion Grace is also working to enhance digital inclusion. They have recently applied to #Covconnects for laptops, which will help residents access online resources and complete necessary forms.
This initiative offers comprehensive support, combining friendship, food, advice, and digital access. The Dominion Grace Breakfast Club is a shining example of community resilience in action, bringing people together and providing essential support to those in need.
Coventry Empowered African Women – Celebrating International Women's Day
This month, Community Resilience has been actively supporting the Coventry Empowered African Women's Group by assisting them in applying for external funding for room hire, cultural events, and activities.
To celebrate International Women's Day, the group held an event on 8th March at The Windmill Hotel. This year’s event was more than just a gathering; it was a powerful reminder that when women rise, society rises with them.
Display stations were set up around the venue, showcasing the work of inspiring women and setting the stage for an empowering night ahead. Ninety-five women attended the event, including the Mayoress, who marked the occasion with official recognition and support. The Mayor led a toast, symbolising unity and commitment to the cause, before delivering a heartfelt welcome speech.
Throughout the evening, guests were inspired by a series of speeches, poems, songs, and other performances. Dr. Abi from Warwick University introduced the Clarity+ Project, a ground breaking initiative focused on empowering women through research, education, and policy development.
This event was more than just a celebration; it was a movement. It reinforced that empowerment is not just about providing opportunities but about breaking down barriers, amplifying women's voices, and supporting one another in every way possible. Together, we can achieve great things.

Core Activities & Innovation
The project merges IR's PLACES by EcoGPX® app - a geo-tagged storytelling platform - with MakingCulture's experimental arts expertise to reimagine public spaces. Key activities include:
- Hybrid Workshops: In-person sessions in Coventry (City of Peace) and Coburg (historic innovation hub) combined with virtual exchanges, engaging marginalised communities, artists, and youth.
- Digital Storytelling: Participants co-create AR-enabled narratives tied to heritage sites like Coventry Cathedral's Reconciliation sculpture and Coburg's reconstructed 1888 Flocken Electric Vehicle.
- Sustainable Dialogue: Addressing shared challenges such as environmental justice and social inclusion through collaborative creativity.
Why Coventry & Coburg?
Coventry, a symbol of postwar reconciliation, and Coburg, reconciling its complex history, offer contrasting narratives ideal for intercultural exchange. Building on IR's EcoGPX Launchpad Coventry - which engaged 450+ participants in place-based storytelling - and MakingCulture's sustainability initiatives (e.g., Coburg's Sustainability Days), the partnership pioneers innovative community-driven solutions.
Impact & Vision
- Community Empowerment: Equip participants with digital storytelling skills and platforms to amplify underrepresented voices.
- Cross-Border Learning: IR adopts MakingCulture's participatory arts methods, while Coburg integrates IR's digital tools for heritage engagement.
- Scalable Model: Develop a framework for international arts partnerships addressing climate action and social cohesion.

A network of 15 social supermarkets across Coventry. The Food Hubs (Social Supermarkets) offer discounted food parcels, which typically equate to £25 worth of food for a cost of a £5 membership per week. Food hubs differ from food banks, in that the food is not entirely free, but provides a wide range of food for a very low cost to support people living in food poverty. Unlike a Food bank, you don’t need a voucher to access food support, you can self-refer by getting in touch with your local Coventry Food Hub.
- To donate food to your local food hub: see https://www.coventryfoodnetwork.org.uk/our-locations for your local food hub location and opening hours.

Coventry Foodbanks
Coventry Food Banks provide a minimum of three days’ emergency food to people in crisis, alongside additional support.
Food banks work with frontline professionals to identify people who need support and give them a food bank voucher. These professionals include local agencies like Family Hubs, housing associations, advice services, and social care, who are best placed to assess need.
Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days’ emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal and can signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.

All Saints Church Allesley
The Community Resilience Team has worked with All Saints Church in Allesley Village to secure a £20,000 grant from the National Lottery Fund to support their essential community initiatives.
This funding will enable the church to continue to provide a kitchen facility for refugee women, providing a space to prepare homemade meals. This initiative not only allows the women to cook for their dietary needs, often unmet by their current accommodation, but also fosters opportunities for the women to build friendships, receive support, and connect with the local community. One outcome of the project was a community member being able to bake a birthday cake for her children—something that would not have been possible otherwise.
The grant will also contribute to utility costs to cover community group activities, fund gardening tools for local clean-up events, and support the church’s ongoing programs for young people.
Public access bleed control kits
The Community Resilience Team connected the Hillfields Muslim Association (Masjid-E-Zakariyya), and Coventry City Council's Community Safety Team, to provide Public Access Bleed Control Kits which will be located at the mosque on Berry Street.
These life-saving kits are equipped with essential tools to manage severe bleeding effectively during emergencies, offering critical support until professional medical help arrives.
Their availability in public spaces means the equipment can be used quickly which could potentially help save lives.
Pictured is Ghulam Vora Ghulam Vohra, Vice Chairman, Coventry Muslim Forum receiving the kits.
If your community venue could benefit from a Public Access Bleed Kit, please contact communityresilience@coventry.gov.uk(External link) for more information.

The Tile Hill Community Partnership (THCP), reached out for support in hosting a community event for local residents. The event featured a treasure hunt designed for young people, encouraging them to explore community spaces and council buildings, including the library and family hub. At each stop, participants collected clues and stamps, and upon completing the hunt, they received back-to-school supplies such as pens, bags, and rulers, all donated by the Financial Ombudsman staff based in Coventry.
Local developer Wain Homes also participated in the event. They hosted a stall where they engaged with families about their housing developments and encouraged young people to design their own dream communities. The company also distributed free giveaways.
John-Rhys Jones, Planning Manager at Wain Homes, commented, "“It was a pleasure to have been invited to take part in the event. It was well organised and well attended which was fantastic to see, so important to have these community get togethers available to all, especially to keep children entertained during the summer holidays. For us it was an opportunity to raise awareness of the work we are doing in the local area and potentially inspiring the next generation to think about careers in the construction industry”.
Over 800 people turned up throughout the day and 300 people accessed free food, while also being able to access housing, financial and other advice from stall holders, including accessing preowned school uniforms. This is the second event THCP have run, and another one will be organised next year. The Community Resilience team have supported the partnership to access two years of grant funding to help the local organisations work together to support residents in Tile Hill with the health & wellbeing opportunities.
Hope Hub at St Laurence's Church secures grant funding to continue its vital community support
Since 2020, St. Laurence’s Church in Longford has been operating its 'Hope Hub' to support the local community. They can also support with baby & non-food supplies such as nappies, wipes & toilet rolls, laundry, cleaning and toiletries.
The Hope Hub has expanded its support and can offer free debt support appointments for people in need, and the hub is also a safe place for people experiencing domestic abuse, the team are trained to support anyone seeking help. Please refer to their website for more information(External link).

A Project of New Connections
EcoGPX® has brought together artists, practitioners, and communities in Coventry, creating a dynamic and inclusive creative network. Through four artistic residencies, the project has:
Connected artists and practitioners: Diverse artists from various disciplines collaborated to form a supportive and enduring creative community.
Connected communities: By valuing cultural diversity and encouraging mutual understanding, EcoGPX® cultivated connections across Coventry’s multifaceted communities.
Connected people with the city: Participants rediscovered Coventry’s green and blue spaces, deepening their sense of belonging and nurturing meaningful ties to their surroundings.
Reimagining Places and Perspectives
Central to EcoGPX® is the development of the Places mobile app, a unique platform that engages people with the culture of places. The app allows Contributors to ‘place’ videos and photos/text guides offering Viewers with a playful digital insight into Coventry’s streets, parks, and landmarks.
“Through the Places app, everyday places are transformed into vibrant canvases for storytelling, artistic expression, and shared memories,” said Dr. Jo Scott. “This unique blend of technology and creativity fosters new ways of connecting with both the city and ourselves.”
Empowering New Creative Practices
EcoGPX® has set a new benchmark for community-centred creative practices by combining:
Ethical use of technology: The Places app provides an inclusive, intuitive platform for sharing and experiencing art in meaningful ways.
A co-creative approach: Residencies were shaped by deep listening and active engagement, ensuring activities reflected the voices of Coventry’s communities.
Sustainable models: The project developed frameworks that can be adapted to other communities, emphasising connection, creativity, and care.
Key Achievements:
6-month project duration
14 venues across Coventry
4 residencies involving 26 artists
Over 450 participants
1 brand new mobile application

Looking Ahead
As the report outlines, the EcoGPX® model has far-reaching applications, from urban planning to healthcare, amplifying voices, and nurturing community resilience. This innovative approach opens new pathways for social impact through creative engagement with place.
The Places app is fabulous for independent artists or large cultural or heritage organisations, galleries etc providing a window into place-based work, as a digital repository or tool for interactive engagement, and for increasing visitor numbers.
