Background

The Council has won funding from the Government to deliver a package of traffic and pedestrian improvements
focused on the London Road corridor between Toll Bar End and Whitley Interchange. This is so we can reduce
traffic congestion, improve walking and cycling routes, and create new accesses to the new sites for new homes.
Before we draw up any plans in detail, we want to know what you think the road and traffic issues are. Your local
knowledge will be really valuable.

There are a number of developments planned in the area and we want to make sure that we provide sustainable
transport links between the city centre and the new developments and existing communities. We also want to
encourage more people to cycle and walk by making it easier and safer to do so, and improve the reliability of
local bus services using London Road.

Traffic survey data shows us that there are high amounts of traffic using London Road and this contributes to:
• Poor air quality due to traffic building up and having to wait
• Poor reliability of bus services due to the build-up of traffic
• No space to cycle, meaning that people don’t feel safe to ride bikes in the area

What could we do?

Make it a better place to cycle - this could include a segregated cycleway on the road and improved crossings at the busiest locations. A segregated cycleway is where a lane for cyclists is physically separated from the rest of the road and from pedestrians on the pavement, for example with kerbs, so only people on cycles can use it. The Coundon and Binley cycleways are examples of what can be done

Improve air quality in the area - we can do this by making traffic flow more smoothly through the junctions on the route, reducing the amount of queuing traffic

Improve the quality and reliability of bus services in the area - we are already working with bus companies to improve the quality of buses operating in the city, with the planned introduction of electric buses over the next few years. We want to ensure that these buses can run as reliably and smoothly as possible. Bus service data
shows that the roundabout at Asda is a particular pinch point

Make it safer for pedestrians - we can do this by including signal-controlled crossings at key points and improving walking routes
