The council have developed a survey to gather your views on the proposed expansion of The Link Extended Learning Centre (ELC). The Link is an Alternative Provision for pupils in Key Stage 4. This means that it is for pupils aged 14-16 who have struggled to access mainstream schooling because of social, emotional, and mental health issues (SEMH).
At the moment, this important work takes place in two different places: at the Link ELC and at Swanswell ELC. The plan is to combine both of these centres at the Link ELC at the same time as reconfiguring, refurbishing, and building a second storey expansion to the Link ELC.
Combining both centres will lead to two things:
The first is that we will be able to offer an expanded curriculum to pupils, we can manage movement between classes better, and running costs will be lower. There will be more purpose-built classrooms for vocational and enrichment subjects like construction, vehicle maintenance, hospitality, music, and hair and beauty. There will also be classrooms for core subjects like English and Maths, as well as a new canteen and special intervention spaces. This proposed project will enable more children to be able to access these facilities and ensures the current quality of education provided by the school continues to increase.
The second is that moving from the Swanswell site will mean that Sidney Stringer Secondary School can use the building there to accommodate more pupils. We hope this will be ready for the September 2022 intake of pupils.

Thank you for the comments received as part of this consultation, after analysing the feedback, a determination has been made to proceed with the project. The feedback in relation to safeguarding has been taken on board and brought into the project scope, concerns around the merging of the two sites has been considered and risk mitigations explored and in place, for regular monitoring and updating. A planning application is scheduled for submission in February 2021. Further comments on the design layout will be requested at this point.
