Coventry City Council currently provides an Early Intervention and Young People’s Substance Misuse Service. This service supports children and young people with substance misuse, including the impact of parental substance use (sometimes known as “hidden harm”). It also offers support around relationships, online safety and sexual health.

Following recent conversations with young people, families, service providers and professionals who work with the service, the Council is reviewing how substance misuse services for children and young people are provided in Coventry.

Why are we considering this?

We want to make sure that children and young people receive the right support, in the right place, at the right time. By focusing the substance misuse service specifically on education, prevention, harm reduction and targeted substance misuse support, we can help ensure this service is clear in its purpose and works effectively alongside other services that already support children and young people in Coventry.

What is being proposed

The Council is considering commissioning a Children and Young People’s Substance Misuse Service that focuses specifically on:

  • education and prevention
  • harm reduction
  • targeted support related to substance misuse

Under this proposal, support around relationships, online safety and sexual health would no longer be delivered as part of the substance misuse service. Instead, these areas of support would be provided by other existing services in the city, such as children’s services, mental health services, youth justice services and other organisations that already work with children and young people.

We want to hear from you

We are seeking your views on this proposal and how it may affect children and young people in Coventry.

Your feedback will help inform decisions about future services.

Deadline for responses is 25 March.
